HeadshotsFascia is our inner skin, a network of living connective tissue that creates communication lines and flexible connectivity between all our parts. Did you know that movement keeps this sponge-like information highway flowing? The twisting, compression and stretching movements of yoga keep our bodies juicy and buoyant, and this fluid-filled highway – called the Interstitium – open.  It’s no wonder yoga is so popular!  Learn more on Sunday April 28th 12:30-4PM.  Join us for a Workshop on Fascia, the Interstitium and Yoga, presented by Leigh Anne Milne of Sadhana Yoga.

Not only does the interstitium help distribute nutrition and remove toxins, it manages mechanical properties of movement such as strength, elasticity, and hydration. The interstitium is composed mainly of collagen types I, III, and V and elastin which are mechanically entangled and cross-linked to form a gel-like network. Yoga massages, stretches, kneads, twists and nourishes this network keeping the body strong and supple and the internal systems cleansed and nourished.

A-FasciaThe fluid-filled interstitial space lines our connective tissue wrapping around muscle and organs. It’s not just about lubrication, scientists think this extracellular matrix may actually be an organ itself and part of our immune system.  Fascia is connective tissue that contains our sixth sense, the sense of where we are in space, which corresponds with the element ether (space). The twisting, compressive and stretching movements of yoga keep our bodies juicy and buoyant, and this fluid-filled communications highway open.
