Akari-UekaoiLearn Odissi – a Classical Indian dance – with Akari

For an Odissi dancer, Akari, it is not an exaggeration for her to say that dance has saved, sustained, and become her lifeblood.

Odissi is one of the traditional Indian dance forms.
It originated in the state of Orissa, eastern part of the India.
It was performed in the temples as an offering by the Maharis who dedicated their lives to the service of the divine.

Akari was born and raised in Japan and moved to Maui 16 years ago.
She grew up dancing a traditional Japanese dance and other dance forms.

akari-danceAkari met her Odissi teacher, Sarala Dandekar 10 years ago, and she has been studying Odissi under her guidance.
In 2012, Akari had her Manchapravesh, a debut ceremony which marks completion of formal training and initiates dancers into a further commitment to the art form. Although the dance form is technically challenging and requires much patience and practice to improve, her love for this art form has been steadily growing over the years; so much so, that she traveled to India to study with Sarala’s teacher, Guru Jhelum Paranjape in 2013.

akari-odissiThe fundamental reason why Akari fell in love with Odissi was due to its strong spiritual background, which resonated with the spiritual seeker in her. It was like attaining English skills have helped her to communicate with people around the world, learning the Odissi dance helped her to communicate with the divine in a new way.
