Restorative Yoga

Kay Huckabee – View Schedule for current class dates & times.

In restorative yoga, props are used for support the body so that you can hold poses for longer, allowing you to open your body through passive stretching. The postures are usually adapted from supine or seated yoga poses with the addition of blocks, bolsters, and blankets to eliminate unnecessary straining. For instance, a seated forward bend (paschimottanasana) can be done with a bolster or several folded blankets on top of the legs so that your forward bend is fully supported with the entire torso resting on your props. Legs up the wall (viparita karani) is a classic restorative, with the wall used as a prop to support the legs.

Restorative classes are usually very relaxing and are a good complement to more active practices. The teacher will arrange for the necessary props to be available to you. The lights may be dimmed and if it is chilly, you may be covered with a blanket since you will not be warming up the body the way you would be in a regular class. After you are set up in a pose with all your props, you will hold the pose for an extended period, often up to ten to twenty minutes. Although you are supported, you will definitely still feel the stretch. It’s a relaxing style of practice that leaves you feeling open and refreshed.

RUEDA DE CASINO
($10.00 PER PERSON)
LEVEL 1 (7:00-8:00)
LEVEL 2 (8:00-9) CORE DANCING/LEVEL 3 (9- 3:30)

Rueda de Casino was developed in Havana, Cuba in the late 1950s and early 1960s by the group Guaracheros de Regla.  As a result of the Castro regime, many Cubans emigrated to the US, many to the Miami area. They took their culture with them, including various dishes, music and dancing. Rueda de Casino began to slowly make its way into the Miami salsa community and in the late 1980s and early 1990s it experienced an enormous explosion of popularity. From Miami, Rueda de Casino spread first to major U.S. metropolitan centers.  In 2014, the first International Rueda de Casino Multi Flash Mob took place in which people from 67 countries, including 199 cities, danced Rueda de Casino simultaneously.

cuban-salsaPairs of dancers form a circle, with dance moves called out by one person, a caller (or “líder” or “cantante” in Spanish). Many moves have hand signs to complement the calls; these are useful in noisy venues, where spoken calls might not be easily heard. Most moves involve the swapping of partners, where the partners move around the circle to the next partner. The combination of elaborate dance combinations and constant movement of partners create a visually spectacular effect.

After completing the first study of its kind, researchers have discovered that very early musical training benefits children even before they can walk or talk. They found that one-year-old babies who participate in interactive music classes with their parents smile more, communicate better and show earlier and more sophisticated brain responses to music.

“Babies who participated in the interactive music classes with their parents showed earlier sensitivity to the pitch structure in music,” says Trainor. “Specifically, they preferred to listen to a version of a piano piece that stayed in key, versus a version that included out-of-key notes. Infants who participated in the passive listening classes did not show the same preferences. Even their brains responded to music differently. Infants from the interactive music classes showed larger and/or earlier brain responses to musical tones.”

Prenatal Yoga

Leslie Michel – View Schedule for current class dates & times.
prenatalPrenatal yoga is the deliberate weaving together of yoga and childbirth preparation. These classes open the door for women to reclaim their physical, mental, and emotional power and receptivity during pregnancy and the birth process. “Somehow, as women, we think we will automatically know how to give birth,” says Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa, co–founder and director of Golden Bridge Yoga in Los Angeles, who has taught prenatal yoga for nearly 30 years. “But we are so detached from our instinctual selves that sometimes we need to be reminded of what we already know.”

For a growing number of women, that reminder is prenatal yoga. For Expectant mothers Prenatal yoga classes offer a place of refuge where women learn to connect with their changing bodies, their babies, and each other. Asana prepares them physically for giving birth, but most women find that the awareness of body, mind, and breath is what truly helps them when it’s time to deliver. As Rachel Yellin, a prenatal yoga teacher in San Francisco, says, “Doing prenatal yoga doesn’t mean you’ll have the ‘perfect’ birth; it means you’ll be able to accept the perfection of the birth you’re given, regardless of whether it goes according to your plan.” Enjoy the beautiful exchange of energy that takes place between you and your developing baby through the thoughtful guidance and supportive community in these classes.

Iyengar Yoga

Kay Huckabee – View Schedule for current class dates & times.

iyengar-chair-yogaAs with all types of yoga, an Iyengar class begins with a period of silence to quieten the brain and encourage a focused state of mind. The aim of yoga is to unite the body, mind and spirit so it’s essential that your mind is concentrating on the task in hand and not on office politics, the argument you had with your friend, or what you’ll be wearing at the weekend.

Focusing on standing poses, Iyengar yoga teaches you how to adjust and align the body correctly, which ensures a strong foundation for more advanced poses. Unlike Ashtanga yoga which is fast flowing and designed to increase your heart rate, Iyengar yoga is slower as students are required to maintain the postures for a longer period of time to gain the maximum benefit. The classes are also more verbal and precise as your teacher is trained to iron out all mis-alignments in your body and will therefore walk round the class correcting postures as a matter of course. Once the standing poses have been mastered, focus will turn to teaching more advanced poses such as back bends, forward bends, inverted postures or recuperative postures.

Iyengar yoga pioneered the use of props to aid both beginners and more advanced pupils in maintaining postures and to allow them a greater stretching ability, which in turn helps build strength, coordination and balance. It may feel a little odd introducing cushions, wooden bricks, blankets, belts or even sand bags to your class, but in this form of yoga it’s all the rage and for those less flexible it’s one form of cheating that’s allowed.

Classes generally last for one and a half hours and you can expect to come away feeling re-energised despite having worked your socks off and hopefully walking a little taller.

Kundalin Yoga

Neenel Kharb – View Schedule for current class dates & times.

Kundalini Yoga (kuṇḍalinī-yoga), also known as laya yoga, is a school of yoga that is influenced by Shaktism and Tantra. It derives its name through a focus on awakening kundalini energy through regular practice of meditation, pranayama, chanting mantra and yoga asana. Kundalini (in Sanskrit kuṇḍalinī means “coiled one”), is a primal energy, or shakti, located at the base of the spine. Different spiritual traditions teach methods of “awakening” kundalini for the purpose of mastering one’s energy flow.

Many systems of yoga focus on the awakening of Kundalini through meditation, pranayama breathing, the practice of asana and chanting of mantras. In physical terms, one commonly reports the Kundalini experience to be a feeling of pleasant electric current running along the spine.

Called by practitioners “the yoga of awareness”, Kundalini Yoga aims “to cultivate the creative spiritual potential of a human to uphold values, speak truth, and focus on the compassion and consciousness needed to serve and heal others.”  To inquire about this class, please fill out the form below

Once a movement has been learned it is stored within the sub – cortex of the brain. Even if you haven’t ridden a bicycle in 30 years you can still get on a bike today and ride it because you once learned how to do and your sub – cortex has a stored map of that pattern in your brain. Most of our stored, learned patterns serve us very well. Can you imagine if you had to think about how to lift a coffee cup to your mouth or how to bend down and pick something up each time you needed to? But what about the learned patterns that don’t serve us? We’ve all experienced sitting at a computer and slumping. When we habitually repeat a pattern of slumping over time it results in chronic neck, shoulder and mid back pain. In order to change an involuntary, chronically contracted muscle one must relearn a new pattern by using the frontal cortex of the brain. Through accessing the brains frontal cortex we can intentionally reset the habitually contracted muscles back to resting length so that your body remembers where the “off switch” is when muscles are not in use.

Hanna Somatic Education classes utilize the exploration of movements performed in a specific way to improve muscular control, gain freedom of movement, increase flexibility, improve posture and core stability. Through neuromuscular retraining, muscles that have learned to become habitually contracted in response to stressful life conditions or injury can be restored to their natural state of voluntary control.
It is a process through which painful, learned adaptive responses can become un-learned, and then reversed. It allows us to remember what we inherently already know; how to be in our bodies with a greater sense of ease and lightness.
Through a series of powerful, yet gentle, movements you can experience the following benefits:
– Greater ease of movement
– More energy and vitality
– Freedom from pain and stiffness
– Improved balance and posture
– Increased comfort and flexibility
– Greater awareness of your body

During the weekly classes you will learn how to maintain and enhance your own health by learning movements which include freeing the muscles of the back, waist, abdomen, hips, legs, torso, shoulders and neck. Core stability and freeing the muscles in the center of the body are emphasized. These lessons, when performed regularly are designed to teach you how to free yourself from pain, stiffness and constriction and to move with greater freedom and fluidity.

Back pain has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. Low back, neck and shoulder pain are common in 90% of the population. Pain is the body’s message that something is going on that needs our attention. It is our brains way of signaling us that some part of us is in need of healing. Through discovering new ways of moving with awareness our brain learns new possibilities for movements that are more organized and balanced.

Life is constant movement. Your brain is great organizer of movement in your body managing billions of connections through your sensory-motor system to produce any motion whether it be large or small.

We can learn to use our bodies well. If we use our bodies intelligently, we can spend hours doing tasks such as forward bending without injury to our spine.
